Antibiotics are medicines used to treat infections caused by bacteria. In addition to killing the bacteria that cause infection, antibiotics can also kill the helpful bacteria that live in the body. Doctors will only prescribe antibiotics if they think that they are appropriate to your illness and the benefits outweigh the risks. There are also many side effects of antibiotics. Proper use can help prevent many of their negative effects.
It is important to realize that antibiotics only treat bacterial infections. They are useless against viral infections (for example, the common cold) and fungal infections (such as ringworm).
Possible Side Effects:
- Diarrhoea
- Rash on the body
